Showcase: Whitestar clones and conversions by other people

This page is a showcase for Whitestar models built or being built by other people. Also included here are some images of conversions of my Whitestar clone, that people have made for use in other software packages.

Some have built their model by following the Whitestar Tutorial, others have used the extensive reference material available on this site to build their version.

If you have a Whitestar clone that you would like shown on these pages, you can email me an image at kier@ap3d.com. Please refer to the image specifications at the bottom of this page if you would like to submit your image. Please also include any relevant text materials, such as your name, email address (if you want), a brief description of your model, and the URL of a page which will give more information if you have one.

You can either submit a rendered image, or a screengrab from Lightwave like this one of my Whitestar v4.0. If you want to submit a screengrab, then grab the largest image that your monitor will support, and then resize the image using Photoshop or similar.

Name Gerardo G'Raal Ramirez
Date 21 July 2000
Software 3D Studio Max
Details

Here you can see the first and finest conversion of my (Kier's) Whitestar 90 to 3D Studio Max format.

Gerardo has made a great effort to accurately reproduce every detail of the Lightwave version in Max, even down to faithfully reproducing the effect of the Lightwave procedural 'underwater' texture used as a diffuse map on the Whitestar's skin.

A nice job, I'm sure you'll agree.

Name Ian Bremner
Date 7 November 99
Software Lightwave
Details

Here you can see version 1.5 of Ian Bremner's Whitestar. He created most of the ship by following the Whitestar Tutorial, although the navigational array in the nose and the lower hull section were built under his own steam, (as I still haven't managed to get these sections of the tutorial finished at the time of writing).

This is the first completed Whitestar I've seen made by following the tutorial, and I'm sure you'll agree, it looks great! Nice bit of compositing too...

Name William Johansson
Date 5 November 99
Software 3D Studio Max R3
Details

William's conversion of the Beyond Babylon preview version of my Whitestar v4.0 is looking great, as you can see. It certainly shows that the 3DSMAX renderer is growing up nicely :-)

William says that he will probably tweak the lighting setup, and fiddle with the textures some more, but for now I think it's safe to say that this is the best 3DSMAX conversion of the Whitestar available to date.

Name Tim Riley
Date 9 December 99
Software Lightwave
Details

This White Star is made by Tim Riley. He used the Pics and Kier's WS Tutorial as reference material. It is currently version 1.0 and in 2.0 there will be a complete rebuild to get it more accurate to the original model.

White Star v1.0 modeled by Tim Riley has now been released. It can be downloaded at his site here: http://www.3dpg.com.

Name Tim Riley
Date 18 October 99
Software Bryce 3D
Details

As well as his own Whitestar (above), Tim has also converted my version of the Whitestar for use in Bryce 3D. This image is entitled "WhiteStar Flies Over Zha-ha-dum". You can see larger versions of this image at Tim's own site.

Name James Daughtry
Date 22 June 99
Software Lightwave
Details

This version, built by James Daughtry is currently in the texturing stage. He has not been following the tutorial, as he had a few ideas on making it easier.

You can see a larger version of this image on James own site.

Name Alan Best
Date 18 February 99
Software Lightwave
Details Alan Best has been following the tutorial to create his version of the Whitestar.

Name JM de Lauwereyns
Date 21 July 99
Software POV-Ray
Details

Although this model has not been built from scratch, and is actually a conversion of Kier's Whitestar v3.6, this image shows that you don't necessarily need expensive software to produce great imagery. This image was rendered with the free renderer, POV. The textures have been converted to GIF so that POV can read them.

Additionally, Jean-Marc is now working through the Whitestar Tutorial to produce his own model from scratch. We look forward to seeing the first images from that soon!
