Welcome to the White Star v4.0 Development History.
This section used to be called the Whitestar v4.0 Preview
Pages, but now that Whitestar v4.0 has
been released, I have decided to keep these pages as a
kind of development history.
* * *
The first thing that many of you might be thinking is "Why another
version?" I can understand that thought. At a glance, White Star v3.6
is almost indistinguishable from the original White Star built by Ron Thornton, almost.
This new version has come about due to two events. The first event was this: A few
weeks ago, a fellow B5 modeller emailed me saying that he thought that a particular part
of my White Star was incorrect. He also sent me a revised version of the section which he
had modelled. I looked hard at his and mine, and I could see that neither of us had really
got it quite right... The second event was (and is) the 'Build Your Own White Star
Tutorial' which I am putting together at the moment. Writing the tutorial has had me
looking very closely at my model, and I've been picking holes in it here and there...
Eventually, I found one too many errors and inaccuracies, and as I now have more reference
material to work from, I decided to do a complete rebuild. White Star v4.0 is the result
of this rebuild.
These are the main changes:
A new spline cage has been built, completely replacing the old one, giving a far more
accurate and aesthetically pleasing model.
The textures have been improved and tweaked.
The awful rendering errors that used to occur on some of the sections of the ship have
been eliminated.
A new lighting system has been installed to replace the old template scene.
AND
I will also be releasing a modified version of the White Star, configured as White Star
90 from the new Babylon 5 movie: A Call to Arms.
